A garage is a great thing to have in the winter, but not all garages are created equal. Some get so cold, you may wonder what’s the point. While having a fully heated garage that’s essentially an extension of your home is ideal, it’s not practical for everyone.

Especially if your garage isn’t attached.

Whatever your situation is, there are a number of things you can do to keep your garage a little warmer in the winter months.

Insulate Walls

Garage’s aren’t always assembled with the greatest craftsmanship. The first thing you should check is the insulation. If the walls and ceiling aren’t insulted, you’re going to be fighting an uphill battle trying to keep things warm.

Check and Fix Weatherstripping

Next on the list is weatherstripping, especially if you’re feeling some drafts coming through your garage. Weatherstripping around doors and windows is a relatively cheap fix, so get it done. If you’re doing it yourself, make sure to remove all previous stripping and sealant before adding any new material.

Heaters

If you want a garage that’s truly warm, you’ll obviously need a heater. There are a lot of options out there for you when it comes to heaters. Some can be left on and come with built in thermostats, while many others are very unsafe to leave unattended.

You’ll also have to decide between gas or electric. Gas heaters will need a gas line, which can be tricky. Electric heaters are often more convenient and even cheaper upfront, but more expensive to leave running for long periods.

Whatever option you go with, make sure to invest in a quality heater. A little space heater may heat up a bedroom or office, but it’s not going to make a dent in your garage temperature. Make sure you invest in a quality product.
