Just because garages were made to store cars doesn’t mean that’s what you actually have to use them for. Due to their wide-open space and detachment from the rest of the household, garages are used for a variety of purposes around the country.

In the warm months (or for you southern dwelling folk), you can even keep the garage door open and have yourself a nice patio setup.

Whether you don’t have enough space in your home, you don’t feel the need to park your car indoors, or you need to make some noise, here are some other uses for your garage.

The Hangout Spot

A great hangout spot as room to move around and gather people together. Since stalls are large and rectangular, they make great areas for a mancave or lounging area. Just setup some couches, a TV, some speakers, and a minifridge, and you’re set to go.

Movie Room

Taking the hangout spot one step further, you can convert your garage into its own little movie theatre. Just setup a screen or large TV on the backwall, line up some chairs, and you’re all set. You can even add a popcorn machine. With the detachment from the house, you don’t have to worry about noise as much either, though make sure you’re mindful of your neighbors.

Office/Workspace

Want to work from home without working in your home? Garages can be a great workspace, whether it’s an office setup, a wood/mechanical shop, or something else entirely.

Garage offices worked pretty well for a number of people in Silicon Valley, so why can’t one do the same for you?

Music Practice

Looking to start an epic garage band? Maybe you just want a place where your kid can practice his drums without driving you insane. Either way, the open nature of a garage works great as an office space.

Once again, just make sure to be mindful of your neighbors.

Gym

Want to stay in shape without having to fight with people over gym equipment? Why not setup your own space in your garage? If you’re looking to have a home gym, your garage just might be the best area for it.

Make Sure Your Garage is Sealed and Insulated

To make the most out of your garage, you’ll need to do a little work. Especially if you live in a state that experiences true winter. Most garages aren’t built with climate control in mind. You’ll need a quality heater (and possibly some form of A/C as well), and you’ll want to make sure the place is insulated and sealed as well.

This includes the garage door. An insulated garage door is a must. This will keep the heat in and the cold out. It also helps with noise.
