The summer months are when most homeowners and families use their garages and garage doors get the most use. This is especially true for families with younger kids who are sending a majority of their time outside as the temperatures get warmer.

For this reason, we are here to remind you that while garage door operations are generally very safe and reliable, it is good to be aware of the safety hazards that come along with them.

We have compiled our list of general garage door maintenance and safety tips to ensure your garage door is operating properly for maximum safety this summer.

  1. Backup Battery
Be sure your garage door opener has a working battery backup in case of a power outage. This is especially important throughout the summer as severe storms can cause power outages more frequently. A good battery should last up to a dozen uses, in the event of a prolonged outage.
  2. Kids Safety
Take the time to educate your children on garage door safety. Never allow your small children to play with or operate the garage door opener. Teach your children about the safety reverse function and remind them never to play with a moving door.
  3. Inspect Door Springs
Garage door springs should be inspected in the spring for rust, cracking, or any other signs of extensive wear. A snapping spring can send sharp debris into the air causing damage or injury.
  4. Clear Safety Sensors
Spring is a good time to clean out your garage. When doing so, be sure to clean off your safety sensors. Remove all signs of dust and cobwebs from the sensors. Make sure they are positioned properly.
  5. Test Auto-reverse
Perform a safety test of your garage door to verify the auto-reverse function works. You can do this by starting to close your door and then placing an object in the path or the sensors. If they are working properly, the door will pop back up. If they aren’t working or your garage door doesn’t have safety sensors, consider upgrading to a safer overhead door in Ohio asap.
