Garages are wonderful, multipurpose spaces. At least they are when they’re the right size. Many homeowners find their garage space to be lacking. Whether you’re building a brand-new garage, or you’re expanding your current one, it’s important to consider just how much space you need.

While everyone’s situation is different, here are a few factors to think about when it comes to garage size.

What Will You Be Using it For?

It seems like an obvious question, but it’s worth thinking about. What do you currently keep in your garage? What would you like to keep in there? What other purposes might your garage be used for?

You can do a lot more with garages than simply park your car in them. Many people use their garage as a workspace, a lounge space, or even a workout space. With enough room, you might be able to park a vehicle in there and have left over space for additional activities.

You may have more than one car, but do you actually need to park both of them in the garage? Is there another type of vehicle such as a motorcycle or snowmobile you’d like to place in the garage?

Also, consider storage.

Is a Three Car Garage Too Much?

The two-car garage has been the standard in America for a while. For those with the space, however, it’s worth considering a three-car garage.  It’s typically recommended that a three-stall garage is at least 32ft by 22ft, if not larger.

Now, the question is, do you really need three stalls? Or do you just want more space? You can always build an add on to a two-car garage with its own entry door access.

Two Story Garage

Many people think of garages in terms of horizontal space, but there’s no reason why they can’t be expanded vertically. A two-story garage can be especially useful for those with limited property surrounding their home.

Having a second floor in garage opens up room for all sorts of possibilities, allowing you to park your vehicles below without negating the extra room.
