The outbreak of the COVID-19 virus has led to unprecedented measures being enacted to slow its spread and take the burden off hospitals and medical suppliers. This has led to statewide quarantines being put into effect, effectively shutting down schools, restaurants, sporting arenas, venues, and more.

Many Americans are finding themselves either out of work or working from home. Some industries, however, must continue their work onsite. Those in the world of freight, supplies, and logistics find themselves busier than ever as online ordering and deliveries are reaching new levels of demand.

While most are thankful to still have employment during these uncertain times, there are concerns over health and safety, especially for warehouse workers. Warehouses are, after all, enclosed spaces with numerous people packed into them.

If you’re managing a warehouse, it’s very important that your employees are kept safe and healthy during this time. Here are a few simple things you can do to keep them cared for.

Closely Monitor Employee Health

Before employees come in and start their work, they should have their temperature checked, as well as their general condition. It’s true that some carriers of COVID-19 have been shown to be asymptomatic, but it’s very helpful to check.

If there is any question that they’re not well, even if they think it’s unrelated, have them stay home. It is not worth the risk.

Distance and Clean

It’s important to keep people at least 6-feet apart. Stagger breaks so you don’t have too many people eating together at once. Ensure everyone is cleaning up after themselves and sanitizing what they touch. Beyond that, have a person dedicated to going around and regularly cleaning/sanitizing common areas.

Having people wear masks isn’t a bad idea (if you can find them). While they don’t prevent you from contracting COVID-19, they have been shown to stop carriers from spreading it.

Treat Your Employees

Though your employees are probably glad to have a job during all of this, it can still be a stressful time to work through. The more people they’re around, the more likely they are to get COVID-19. If they get it, they’ll then inevitably bring it into their own homes.

Also, with many suppliers, shippers, and warehouses experiencing a surge in busyness, employees are being expected to work harder than ever.

All of this to say, it’s important that you show your employees extra care and attention while this is going on. Let them know that they’re valued and appreciated. Consider buying lunch for everyone or doing something else to say thanks.

Keep Your Warehouse in Working Order

As warehouses are being put under the stress of increased shipments, inventory, and workflow, it’s critical that your warehouse is operating at full capacity. This doesn’t just apply to your workers, but to the warehouse itself.

Make sure everything is running as it should be, from loading doors to loading docks to lights and beyond.
