Garage doors are available in a vast array of sizes and designs. But as far as the actual engineering goes, there’s mostly just three types:

Sectional doors, roller doors, and tilt doors.

Tilt doors are an older, even outdated method of engineering. They take up more space when opening them, they have a great risk of injury, they’re prone to breaking, and they offer no distinct advantages over the other two garage types.

That leaves us with just sectional doors and rolling doors. Each have distinct advantages, which means that one might be a better choice for you than another. Let’s take a closer look at both:

Sectional Doors

Sectional doors are the standard garage doors you’ll find on most homes, as well as many storage facilities. They’re made up of separate panels that hinge as the garage door opens and closes, allowing the door to curve on a track.

A sectional door requires no room in front or directly behind the door. Just above.

Sectional doors are very cost effective. Insulated, double skinned sectional doors are also available for those who need to maximize efficiency.

Whatever type you need, steel sectional doors come in a variety of style options and can even mimic other materials such as wood.

Rolling Doors

Rolling doors, also known as rolling curtains are more commonly found in commercial, agricultural, and machine related settings. The biggest advantage these smooth-rolling doors offer is their ability to almost completely disappear when opened.

Just like their name implies, rolling doors roll into a mounted casing at the top of the doorway. Virtually no extra headroom is needed and no storage space is lost, making these doors incredibly versatile.

Like sectional doors, they can also come with or without insulation depending on your needs.

For those needing a heavier, sturdy solution, rolling steel curtains are the way to go. For high traffic areas where doors are constantly opening and closing, high speed rolling doors are available.
