The good news is, the rates of household break-ins or burglaries have been decreasing in recent years. The bad news is, that they still happen, and more often than not, their entry point is through your garage.

The easiest way for this to happen is through a stolen garage door opener. A stolen garage door opener allows the criminal direct access to your garage and likely to your home.

For this reason, it is essential you take the necessary steps to protect your garage door opener in order to protect your home. In the event your garage door opener is stolen, you will want to act swiftly to avoid burglary or break-in.

Ultimately you will need to secure your home. If you believe your garage door opener in Ohio has been stolen, act fast and take the following measures to ensure it doesn’t lead to further damage and despair for you or your family.

  • Contact Authorities

When you discover your garage door opener has been stolen or it is simply nowhere to be found, it is smart to first notify the police. You will want to give them as much information as possible. When you first noticed it was missing, any detail you may have on who you suspect may have it, where or when you last used it, where you had it stored, etc…

Once you have notified the police there are a few measures you can take to protect your home further.

  • Deactivate Your Remote

Depending on the model of your garage door opener and remote, you may be able to deactivate your remote. The exact method will vary based on your remote but usually, you can:

Reprogram the System- If your garage door opener has a rolling code system you can easily erase all your remote controls from your opener and then simply reprogram the remotes you still have into the system.  Once this is done the stolen remote is useless to the would-be intruders.

Replace the Remote- If you’d prefer to take a proactive approach to protect your home from burglary, you can replace your existing garage door opener with a new one. Doing so will give you the option to alter the security settings so that no one, not even someone that manages to obtain the old remote, can access your home.

  • Change Your Security Code

If your garage door operates with a security code, you can choose to change this code and be sure any unauthorized access to your home is impossible, even with an old remote. This may require a bit of know how but how to do this should be spelled out in the user manual of your garage door opening system.

  • Replace the Whole System

This may seem extreme but if your garage door opening system is very dated, you likely have fewer options for reprograming in the event your remote is stolen. With an old system, maybe you have been considering replacing anyways. If your remote has been stolen maybe that’s the push you need to finally jump into a new updated system with more security options.

Of course, upgrading to a new garage door opening system would render your stolen remote completely useless.
