Your warehouse is where your business’s most precious possessions are kept. For manufacturers, retailers, and distributors, the contents of your warehouse are the lifeblood of your company.

Security should be one of your highest priorities.

Basic locks and an alarm system aren’t enough to deter potential thieves. They can get in and out in under ten minutes. Even if an alarm goes off, that may give them enough time to make a quick grab before the police arrive.

To truly protect your warehouse, you need to take additional measures. Here are a few tips from the warehouse managers we’ve worked with.

Video Surveillance

Not only will security cameras provide you with footage of the people breaking into your warehouse, but their very presence often acts as a deterrent. Additionally, security cameras are great to have during hours of operation as well.

Should an accident take place, you can review what happened.

And if inventory seems to be disappearing despite there being no break-ins, your cameras might be able to show you what’s happening.

Exterior Lighting

A lot of bad things happen in the dark. With no lights surrounding your warehouse after hours, thieves may feel more confident in breaking in. After all, the cloak of darkness makes it much easier to sneak up to and away from the building.

Some well-placed lights, whether they’re static or motion sensor, can be a great way to ward off burglars.

Fencing

It’s only logical that the harder it is to break into your building, the less likely it is that someone will try and break in. A fence might not seem like it’s that secure (unless it’s lined with razor wire), but it adds another barrier between a would-be thief and your warehouse, and that’s always a good thing.

Plus, it makes their exit much more difficult, especially if they’re trying to take items with them.

Interior Cages and Gates

Don’t just protect the outside of your warehouse. Protect the inside too. If you have a particularly valuable set of items, keep them in a locked cage or behind a gate. Even if someone manages to get inside your warehouse, they may be unprepared to get through this secondary defense.

Quality, Well Secured Doors

If someone is breaking into your warehouse, it’s going to happen through a door or window. Some bars over the windows can take that option off the table.

As for the doors, you’ll need quality material and professional installation if you want to be properly protected. At Springfield Overhead Door, we provide a wide range of entry and overhead doors to meet your warehouse’s needs.

And we provide installation and inspection services as well.
